Rain threat for IND vs NZ? Here’s what happens if T20 World Cup 2026 Final gets washed out
What will the ICC rules do if the final of the Men's T20 World Cup 2026 between India and New Zealand at the Naredra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad gets washed out as the game takes place on March 08?

The focus and attention during the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 has been on the final between India and New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, as the Suryakumar Yadav-led side has qualified for their fourth final of the event, while it will be the second final of the Kiwis after they lost their first final in 2021 against Australia in Dubai.
Suryakumar Yadav's army reached the summit clash by getting a narrow margin of seven runs over the Harry Brook-led England side at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, as India became the third team after Pakistan and Sri Lanka to make it to the successive final of the T20 World Cups. The hosts have a chance to win the record third title of the competition.
However, New Zealand remains a tough opponent and has never lost to India in their previous three meetings of the T20 WCs, including 2007, 2016, and 2021, as the games were played in Johannesburg, Nagpur, and Dubai. With such a big game ahead, the weather will play a key role in the final.
What happens in rain washes out T20 World Cup 2026 final
The International Cricket Council (ICC) rules have revealed that the organizers will first try to complete the match on the scheduled day, even if the game has to be shortened due to rain. If the game can’t be completed, then a reserve day has been in place.
The game will continue from the same point where it stopped rather than starting again. Meanwhile, if the rain prevents any result even after the reserve day, then both sides will be declared joint winners of the tournament. Another possibility of the game could be a potential tie.
In that case, the winner of the game will be decided through the Super Over, where both teams get one extra over to bat and bowl. Even if the Super Over also ends in a tie, then another Super Over will be played as the new rule has been activated after the dramatic final of the 2019 ODI World Cup at Lord’s.
