Ravichandran Ashwin makes massive move to sign for BBL 2025-26 with this franchise
The former spin all-rounder of the Indian cricket side, Ravichandran Ashwin, has made a massive move to feature for this franchise in the 2025-26 season of the Big Bash League (BBL) to become the first India male player.

India’s former spin all-rounder, Ravichandran Ashwin, has signed with Sydney Thunder for the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) 2025-26, as it will be a landmark move to become the first capped India player in the event. The former Under-19 captain, Unmukt Chand, and former domestic player, Nikhil Chaudhary, had played the BBL in recent years.
Ashwin, who retired from the Indian Premier League a few weeks ago, has already signed up for next week’s ILT20 auction as the player with the highest base price. He will be committed to the league, which will take place between December 02 and January 04. That means that for the first three weeks of the BBL, he would remain unavailable and could join if the Thunder make it into the finals.
“Thunder were crystal clear about how they'd use me and brave enough to back it. My conversations with the leadership were excellent, and we're fully aligned on my role. I love how Dave Warner plays the game, and it's always better when your leader shares your mindset.” Ashwin, who has 317 wickets in 329 T20s at an economy rate of just over seven, stated.

Thunder’s last four games will be on January 06, 10, 12, and 16, while the spinner is likely to be available for three games unless his UAE franchise makes an early exit. He will be under the leadership of David Warner for Thunder and could face Steve Smith and Babar Azam, who will be playing for the Sixers.
“From the first time we spoke, Ashwin impressed everyone at the Thunder with his passion, desire to win, and understanding of what makes our club special. He will bring an injection of fresh energy and world-class bowling mid-tournament, while his presence as a leader and mentor will be invaluable for our young players.” Trent Copeland, the general manager of the franchise, expressed.
Thunder already has Sam Billings, Lockie Ferguson, and Shadab Khan on the list. They have three local spinners in Chris Green, Tanveer Sangha, and Tom Andrews. Their home ground, Engie Stadium, is the most spin-friendly venue in the Big Bash League (BBL).
