Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has made his official announcement of retirement from Test cricket, ending a glorious chapter in his illustrious career. In a heartfelt message posted on social media, Sharma confirmed the same, saying, "Hello everyone, I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It's been an absolute honor to represent my country in the whites." Thank you for all the love and support all these years. I will keep playing for India in the ODI format."

Indian selectors have dropped Rohit Sharma from the Test captaincy a few months before India's tour of England. The BCCI will likely support this decision, although it is uncertain whether Rohit will even be in the squad. The decision was based solely on his failure with the bat in red-ball cricket (and not as part of a broader team reconstruction). Despite his good form in ODIs, leading India to claim the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, Rohit averaged 6.20 during the Test series against Australia and did not perform well at home against New Zealand, and even dropped himself from the final Test in Sydney. In Rohit's tenure as Test captain, India played 24 tests, winning 12, losing 3, and drawing 9. The new Test captain is expected to be announced soon.

Sharma, 38 now, made his Test cricket debut in 2013 against the West Indies, making 177 in his first match. In 61 tests, he scored 4,137 runs at a mean of 44.48, with 12 centuries and 17 half-centuries, his best being 212 against South Africa in 2019. As an opener and then as captain, he guided India to historic victories, including the 2020-21 series victory in Australia. But his recent performance had been questioned, scoring just 162 runs in 15 innings in the 2024-25 season at a 10.83 average, with a lean performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy when he scored merely 31 runs in three Tests.

A Lasting Legacy in Test Cricket

Rohit Sharma’s Test career reflects a legacy built on elegance, adaptability, and leadership. As a batter, he brought stability and flair to India’s red-ball setup, often delivering when it mattered most. As a captain, his tenure featured both strong home dominance and learning curves abroad. His impact in whites has been significant, shaping key victories and inspiring younger talent through composure and maturity at the crease.

Though he bids farewell to Test cricket, Rohit remains a vital force in international and franchise cricket. His commitment to ODIs ensures his continued presence on the global stage, where he’s still chasing glory. Simultaneously, his enduring role with the Mumbai Indians—where he’s led them to five IPL titles—cements his legacy in T20 cricket. While the whites may be retired, Sharma’s competitive spirit and cricketing wisdom continue to influence Indian cricket across other formats.
