At one point of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash between the Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, the visitors looked set to easily cross the 250-run mark. But the home bowlers did well to restrict Bengaluru to 240/4 in their allotted 20 overs.

The dew had already made its presence felt for the last half of the game. However, for Mumbai to complete the chase or even to have a chance of it, they needed a strong start from their opening pair of Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma, who put up a century stand during their previous fixture at this venue.

Rickelton picked up the third delivery of the chase, which was on the good length, and swung his willow over the deep mid-wicket region for a massive six. He ended the over with a fine boundary thanks to a punch through the covers as the ball raced away to the boundary.

The southpaw flicked Bhuvneshwar Kumar over the deep backward square leg for another massive six before backing it up with a four that was pulled towards the deep backward square leg for a boundary. But the most impressive six with the loudest cheer came from Rohit Sharma’s bat on the fifth ball of the third ball.

The Nagpur-born advanced down the surface and smoked the length delivery over the deep mid-wicket region for a huge six as the ball easily crossed the boundary rope. He welcomed Rasikh Salam at the mid-on region for a boundary before timing Krunal Pandya's near-perfect yorker through the point region as Mumbai raced away to 56/0 in five overs.

MI make clinical start in 241-run chase against RCB

Bengaluru got a strong start from their opening batter, Phil Salt, who smashed 78 runs in 36 balls at a strike rate of 216.67, smashing six boundaries and as many sixes before their captain, Rajat Patidar, nailed a strong knock of 53 runs off just 20 balls at a strike rate of 265, thanks to four boundaries and five sixes. Virat Kohli also cracked 50 runs in 38 balls to hold one end.

Mumbai didn’t lose a wicket, but Rohit was retired out due to a hamstring injury as Suryakumar Yadav walked into the middle. The former tried to play a shot after getting the attention, but that couldn’t work.

Brief Scores: (at the time of writing): MI 84/2 (R Rickelton 37, Suyash Sharma 2/8) vs RCB 240/4 (Phil Salt 78, Rajat Patidar 53, Shardul Thakur 1/32)
