Legendary Indian white-ball skipper Rohit Sharma does not fail to create buzz. The World Cup hero is always up to something. After announcing retirement from the red ball format and the shortest format, rumours of his retirement from the ODI format are running rampant. So much so that several media outlets have already started hinting at Shubman Gill, reportedly being in line to become the next ODI captain for India.

While Rohit has not made any comments on this interesting development, the general consensus is of the opinion that the 38-year-old will continue to captain the Indian side in the ODI format. After all, this is the only format in which he will be featuring for his national side. Moreover, in the light of his recent white-ball exploits in the IPL 2025 season, Rohit has demonstrated that he still has the temperament to excel and score runs in this format.

Despite conflicting reports of him stepping down from ODI captaincy, Rohit won't be going anywhere anytime soon. The World Cup-winning captain is here to stay, and the entire nation will be rallying behind him to lift the World Cup trophy in South Africa in 2027. India, under his captaincy, narrowly missed out in the 2023 World Cup final and faced a heartbreaking elimination at the hands of Australia. A few months later, Rohit transformed the team's fortunes by bringing home two consecutive ICC titles (T20 World Cup 2024 & CT 2025), thus helping India end decades of ICC-title drought.

Although Gill has shown an extraordinary level of skill and brilliance in his captaincy in the ongoing England tour, Rohit's experience makes him an indispensable commodity for Indian cricket. Rohit has an ICC title in the ODI and the T20I format. He had a chance to take India to their maiden WTC title glory, but a humiliation against New Zealand at home, followed by a disastrous BGT 2024-25 tour, made that chance go begging.

This is an evolving story, and more details are awaited at this stage.
