Rohit Sharma was the last Indian batsman to score a century at The Oval, where Team India is set to play their final match of the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar trophy starting today (July 31, 2025). Sharma’s century came to revive India. Until the fourth day of that match, it was mostly poised for a dramatic ending, with England having the upper hand.

In the beginning of September, 2021, India was up against England, the home team, at The Oval. In the first innings of the game, the visiting side, led by Virat Kohli, found themselves on the wrong foot, losing all wickets for only 190. In reply, England, captained by Joe Root, edged past India’s total and posted 290 on the scoreboard. Chris Woakes and Ollie Robinson’s dominating bowling performance did not allow India’s batting lineup to settle on the track.

When the brigade in blue was looking in a vulnerable state, Rohit Sharma stood up and delivered in time. Facing 256 balls, ‘hitman’ fired 127 runs, powered by 14 fours and one 6. Half centuries from Cheteswar Pujara, Rishabh Pant, and Shardul Thakur helped their team to get back on the right path. India, in the second innings, came strong with 466 runs and asked the host team to chase a target of 368.

The remaining script of the contest was structured by the Indian bowling attack. Umesh Yadav claimed 3 wickets, and there was a brace for Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, and Shardul Thakur. England was bundled out for 210, and India won the match, coming from behind, by 157 runs.

“I wanted to be on the field, but getting that hundred was special; 100 behind, we knew how important it was to give them a target of 370-odd. A great effort from the batting unit. It's my first overseas hundred, so obviously my best one. The three-figure mark wasn't in my mind; we knew the pressure on the batting unit but kept our heads down and batted the situation”, Rohit Sharma, man of the match, said after the match.
