The former Indian pace all-rounder, Irfan Pathan, has given details from the interview of the former Indian captain, Rohit Sharma, during the fifth and final Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). He reckoned that the interaction on the second day became a focal point.

Rohit Sharma was good in a great touch during the Australia trip. He missed the opening game at the Optus Stadium in Perth due to the birth of his child and collected only 31 runs in five innings at an average of nearly six. Later, he dropped himself from the fifth encounter.

“People say that we supported Rohit Sharma more than necessary. Of course, when someone comes to interview on your broadcasting channel, you will not misbehave with them, right? You have invited him, so you will behave politely. When Rohit came to interview, we were, of course, polite, and we had to show that, because he was our guest.” Irfan Pathan revealed the details.

The Mumbai batter, who retired from the longest format a couple of months ago before the England away series, ended with 4301 runs in 116 innings at an average of 40.57 and a strike rate of 57.05, with the help of 18 half-centuries and 12 centuries at the best score of 212 runs.

“So that was connected and said we were supporting him, but it was we who said...we had said that he should keep fighting, but that said, he should not have had a place in the playing XI. If he was not the captain of the team, he would have been dropped.” The former Baroda all-rounder shed light.

Rohit, after the end of the series, turned up for Mumbai for one Ranji Trophy 2024-25 fixture. Currently, the reports have claimed that the BCCI selectors would have an honest discussion on his future in the 50-over format as he eyes to keep playing till the 2027 ODI World Cup. Under him, India won the Champions Trophy 2025, beating New Zealand in the final, earlier this year.
