India showed their dominance with the bat during the opening T20I of the five-match series against West Indies at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Bajpayee Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. Their captain, Shreyas Iyer, smashed his maiden century of the shortest format in just 42 deliveries as he raised his bat.
It was the third century for an Indian batter against the Caribbean side, along with Rohit Sharma’s 111* and KL Rahul’s 110*. It was also the fourth-fastest T20I century by captains from the full-member nations, as Rohit’s 35-ball century against Sri Lanka in 2017 holds the second position on the list.
Shreyas Iyer's 101* off 42 balls: How India chased down West Indies by 8 wickets
Shreyas didn’t waste much time before smashing the boundaries around the park. He didn’t hit a single six before notching up his half-century, which was his first in 10 T20I innings. But later, he shifted his gear and smashed two successive sixes against Akeal Hossein and Shamar Springer.
Matthew Forde was put into the stands for consecutive deliveries by Iyer before his two more sixes against the same bowler saw him register his century in just 42 balls. That was his second successive century in T20s at this venue, having got 101* against LSG in IPL 2026.
India won the 172-run chase by eight wickets with 32 balls to spare. Earlier in the evening, they bundled out the West Indies for just 171 as Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford celebrated their respective fifties of the innings. Axar Patel, Naman Dhir, and Kuldeep Yadav- the spin trio returned with 7/90 in 11.1 overs.
