Shreyas Iyer, who has earned success of late in the white-ball format for India and in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 for the Punjab Kings (PBKS), played his last Test match for the national side more than 18 months ago against England at Vizag. With a huge home season coming with four Tests against the West Indies and South Africa, he eyes a Test recall for the Blue Brigade.

Iyer hasn’t earned the same success in the longest format with 811 runs in 24 innings at an average of 36.86 and a strike rate of 63.01, thanks to five half-centuries and one century at the best score of 105 runs. Overall, in the first-class format, the India batter has accumulated 6363 runs in 137 innings at 48.57 with 15 centuries and 33 fifties.

The veteran has expressed his availability to take part in the upcoming Duleep Trophy for the West Zone as the event kicks off from August 28, with the zonal selection set to happen on August 01. Apart from him, Shivam Dubey and Sarfaraz Khan have also reached the MCA on their full availability, as the reports claimed.

Shreyas Iyer expresses desire to feature in Duleep Trophy 2025: Reports

Iyer led the Punjab side to the final of the IPL 2025, where they lost the contest to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The right-handed batter smashed 604 runs in 17 innings at an average of 50.33 and a strike rate of 175.07, with the help of six half-centuries.

It’s not clear whether the selection committee would go with the players involved in the away series against England. They had been away from home for the last 10 weeks and deserve a break before the upcoming home season. The West zone selectors are likely to avoid Ravindra Jadeja in the side, even though Shardul Thakur remains available.

The south zone has recently named Tilak Verma as their captain, and they decided not to include KL Rahul, Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj, and Washington Sundar. The 2025-26 domestic season will begin on August 28, while the Ranji Trophy starts on October 15, with the opening phase going on till November 19.
