Shubman Gill produced a stunning one-handed diving catch to dismiss Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis in the ongoing first Test at the Galle International Stadium. The Indian captain showed excellent reflexes as he dived to his left and grabbed the ball just inches above the ground. His effort gave India a crucial wicket and put Sri Lanka under more pressure.

The dismissal came in the 17th over when Kuldeep Yadav bowled to Kamindu Mendis. The Sri Lankan batter stepped down the track and tried to drive the ball towards the off side. However, he mistimed the shot and hit the ball in the air towards the cover region. Gill, who was positioned there, reacted quickly and completed a brilliant diving catch.

India had already made a strong start with the ball after being bowled out for 462 earlier in the day. Mohammed Siraj and Manav Suthar picked up early wickets before Kuldeep Yadav joined the attack. Gill's spectacular catch added to Sri Lanka's problems and helped India maintain pressure on the hosts on Day 3 of the Galle Test.

Shubman Gill's stunning diving catch sends back Kamindu Mendis

The incident happened when Kamindu Mendis advanced down the pitch to face Kuldeep Yadav in the first Test at the Galle International Stadium. Mendis tried to play a push-drive, but the ball took the edge of his bat and went slightly up in the air towards extra cover.

Shubman Gill, who was fielding at extra cover, reacted quickly and dived full stretch to his left. As the ball was dropping rapidly towards the ground, Gill stretched out his left hand and grabbed it just before it touched the surface. He held on to the difficult catch even as he landed on the ground.

Gill immediately celebrated the wicket by throwing the ball into the air and punching the air in delight. Mendis was dismissed for 14 runs off 25 balls, giving India another important wicket as the bowlers continued to put pressure on Sri Lanka.

How the dismissal unfolded — Gill's reflexes on full display

The catch was difficult because the ball was dropping quickly towards the ground. However, Shubman Gill showed excellent reflexes and reached out with his left hand just in time to complete the catch.

After holding on to the ball, Gill landed safely on the ground and immediately celebrated the wicket. He threw the ball into the air before raising his arms and punching the air in delight.

The stunning catch left the Sri Lankan fans in disbelief and gave India another important wicket. The video of Gill's brilliant effort also quickly attracted attention on social media.

What this wicket means for India in the Galle Test

Kamindu Mendis' dismissal was a major blow for Sri Lanka as India continued to build pressure in the Galle Test. Mendis tried to break the pressure with an attacking drive, but Shubman Gill anticipated the shot early and made a brilliant diving catch. The wicket gave India another important breakthrough.

India had posted a strong total of 462, with Devdutt Padikkal scoring a superb 167. KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel also scored half-centuries to help India put up a big total. With Sri Lanka needing a strong batting effort, the early wickets put them in a difficult position.

India's bowlers also made a strong start in the second innings. Mohammed Siraj provided the first breakthrough before Manav Suthar and Kuldeep Yadav picked up more wickets. With key batters back in the pavilion, Sri Lanka were under heavy pressure and faced a big challenge to stay in the game.
