Shubman Gill made history on Friday, June 20, by scoring a century in his very first Test match as captain. Batting at No. 4, the 25-year-old reached his hundred during the third session on Day 1 against England at Headingley in Leeds.
Gill was named India’s 37th Test captain on May 24, 2025, when the selectors announced the team for the five-match Test series. Just weeks later, he walked out to lead the team and made his mark right away with the bat.
With this century, Gill became only the fifth Indian to score a hundred in his first Test as captain. He now joins a special list that includes Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, and Virat Kohli.
