Indian Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill has recently been excluded from the T20I squad for the upcoming ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 due to his poor form with the bat in the format. Putting the hard truth behind, Gill has returned to the practice after recovering from a foot injury.

Shubman Gill dropped from T20 World Cup

While Gill is currently going through a rough patch, with injuries and poor batting form, he was out of the last two T20Is against South Africa in the recently concluded five-match home T20I series. As the fourth T20I wasn't played, Sanju Samson replaced Gill for the last game, and the wicketkeeper-batter impressed on his T20I return.

Later, the national selection committee announced the 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, which India and Sri Lanka will host between February 7 and March 8, 2026. While Sanju Samson earned a place, Shubman Gill and Jitesh Sharma have been dropped from the squad. However, the report also suggests that Gill's exclusion from the World Cup was already decided before the fifth T20I against South Africa.

However, Gill is focusing on his international cricket return, as he has returned to practice after recovering from the latest injury, as he is eyeing participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26 and the forthcoming home ODI series against New Zealand in January 2026.
