Shubman Gill's explosive innings for Gujarat Titans ended in a controversial fashion during their IPL 2025 match against SunRisers Hyderabad on Friday, May 2, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Gill was run out on the last ball of the 13th over, and there was a massive debate surrounding the legitimacy of the run-out. The run-out happened at a crucial stage of Gujarat's innings when Gill was looking set to score a century.
It all started with Harshal Patel making an excellent throw to the striker's end and Gill, who was well short of the crease. But subsequently, the big talking point was whether or not SRH wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen removed the bails with the ball in hand. While it was clear Gill was out of his ground, the circumstances of how the bails were removed were not very clear. From some angles, it would appear that Klaasen removed the bails with his glove along the base of the stumps and not the ball. "Does he dislodge the bails with the ball or his gloves?"
TV umpire Michael Gough watched the same sequence of replays from multiple angles. One replay, for instance, showed Klaasen flicking the ball on towards the stumps at the same time the bails were being dislodged. However, the best angles showed no clear evidence to decide one way or another if the ball has made contact with the stumps and dislodged the bails. Despite this uncertainty, Gough ruled Gill out, which led to a visibly furious reaction from the GT captain, who later confronted the fourth official near the boundary line demanding an explanation.

Before our controversial exit, Shubman Gill was batting phenomenally, showing class and timing for his 76 off just 38 balls; 10 fours and 2 sixes were struck, all with no risk taken. He had brought up his 50 in just 25 balls, exhibiting his strokemaking and level-headedness.
Gill firstly fused an 87-run opening partnership with Sai Sudharsan, who offered a scintillating performance of his own with a rapid 48 off 23 balls, before passing on to his rapid 52-run partnership with Jos Buttler, all leaving Gujarat to target a 200-plus score.

The IPL’s match referee and governing council have not issued an official statement regarding the incident. It remains to be seen whether the matter will be addressed formally or dismissed as a judgment call. Either way, the controversy has added fuel to ongoing debates about umpiring standards in the world’s premier T20 league.
