The Indian Test captain, Shubman Gill, who had an impressive Anders-Tendulkar trophy during the five-match Test series in England, is set to be part of the Duleep Trophy 2025, as the reports of The Times of India suggest. The Punjab-born is expected to lead the North Zone in the tournament as they start preparation for the upcoming two-match home Test series against the West Indies.

The red-ball domestic tournament is scheduled to take place from August 28 in Bengaluru, as some of the notable players will take part in the competition with an aim to get back into the national side. This year’s event will return to its traditional zonal format, with the state selectors from each region picking their respective squads.

South Zone is the defending champion, having won the title of the 2023-24 edition. Under Shubman’s leadership, the Blue Brigade drew the five-match series by a 2-2 margin as the 25-year-old rewrote the records with the bat, having smashed 754 runs with four centuries at an average of 75.40, surpassing Sunil Gavaskar’s 732 runs for the most runs by an India captain in a five-match Test series.

Shubman Gill to lead North Zone in Duleep Trophy 2025: Reports

The youngster’s tally is now second to only Sir Don Bradman’s 810 runs in the all-time list for most runs by a captain in a five-match Test series. It was an incredible performance from the Gujarat Titans’ batter of the IPL, who landed in the United Kingdom under so much pressure in the absence of two retired veterans, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

In the opening clash, he smashed 147 runs in the first innings at Leeds in Headingley before drilling a quickfire 269 in the first innings of the second Edgbaston Test. He followed it up with a quickfire 161 in the second innings to help them level the series at 1-1.

After a quiet time at Lord’s, he returned to the fourth Test at Manchester with a gritty knock of 103 runs in 238 balls, which helped them secure a draw. The Duleep Trophy 2025 will give Gill a couple of more weeks to work on a few areas of his leadership.
