SL Sports Minister instructs NSC to share reports on exclusion of Karunaratne

The Games priest of Sri Lanka, Roshan Ranasinghe taught the Games Chief General to present a report on Chamika Karunaratne’s prohibition from the ODI group which is playing against Afghanistan right now in a three-match ODI series.

Following a “disciplinary inquiry” by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), the all-rounder for Sri Lanka Chamika Karunaratne received a one-year ban. During the recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, the player was found guilty of violating a number of terms in the “Player Agreement.” 

After an evaluation, SLC imposed a one-year ban on the all-rounder as a response to the violations. Additionally, the Sports Minister requests a National Selection Committee report on the player’s demotion from the squad. The all-rounder’s selection as Player of the Series in Sri Lanka’s two previous series may have prompted the Sports Minister to take the action. In addition, the sports minister needs an evaluation of Karunaratne because he was a crucial part of the Lankan Lions’ success at the Asia Cup in 2022.

Chamika Karunaratne banned from all forms of cricket

As per the decisions made by the SLC, the all-rounder will not be allowed to take part in any of the formats, be it Tests, T20Is, or even the ODIs for a one year period.

“Considering the seriousness of the violations committed by Mr. Karunaratne, the Inquiry Panel by its report has recommended to the Executive Committee of the SLC to strongly warn the player to refrain from further violations and to impose a punishment that will not have an impact on his cricketing career. Subsequent to the said findings and recommendations of the inquiry panel the Executive Committee of SLC has handed a one-year ban from taking part in all forms of Cricket, and the said ban will be suspended for a period of one year,”

SLC added.
