South Africa have received a massive blow as their premier pacer, Kagiso Rabada, has been ruled out of the opening Test of the three-match series against Australia at Kingsmead in Durban. They have confirmed their playing XI for the game under Temba Bavuma’s leadership as Rabada hurt his right hamstring and hasn’t played a match since May 2026.
Surprisingly, the hosts have picked both the spinners, Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer, in the eleven along with the pace all-rounder, Wiaan Mulder. Bavuma has revealed the presence of Anrich Nortje and Marco Jansen with the new ball for the game.

The Proteas are hopeful of Kagiso Rabada getting back in the eleven for the second game in Gqeberha, with Bavuma showing confidence in Nortje, who hasn’t played a red-ball game since March 2023. That clash against West Indies in Centurion was also his last first-class game in more than 3.5 years.
“It was not an easy one. I think we did go the conservative route to give him a couple of extra days to get as close as he can be to 100 per cent fitness. As soon as he gets the green light, we expect him to be in that starting lineup.” Bavuma expressed in the press conference.
“It's hard to ignore his X-factor. As much as he doesn't have the weight of overs under his belt of bowling with the red ball, he has been doing work with the bowling coaches. He's been very impressive in the nets. So, it was a calculated call to give Anrich a go.” The South Africa captain addressed.

That will be the first Test series between the two sides in the Rainbow Nation since the controversial 2018 series, which was involved in the Sandpaper Gate, that saw Steve Smith, David Warner, and Cameron Bancroft getting penalized after the third Test match.
Throughout the entire Durban Test, the weather will be fine. The sun will be shining with no expectation of rain, which is expected to dry up the surface even more. The spinners will play a major role, especially in the third and fourth innings of the contest.
The series will also be vital for both sides’ qualification in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025/27 final. Both of them have a strong chance to make it into the final game in June 2027.
