Sri Lanka Permitted to Participate in International Cricket Despite Suspension
In a decision made on Tuesday, November 21, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has granted permission for Sri Lanka to engage in bilateral activities and participate in ICC events. The decision was reached following a meeting between the ICC and representatives from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed that the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team will be allowed to participate in international competitions, notwithstanding the recent suspension of the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). The governing body took this decision in response to charges of government interference in the SLC, leading to the suspension of its membership.
This action followed a period of turmoil within the SLC, triggered by the disappointing performance of the Lankan Lions in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Out of the nine matches in the league stage, the team managed only two victories.
In the aftermath of the World Cup debacle, the entire SLC board was dismissed, with Arjuna Ranatunga appointed to head a seven-member interim committee. Although the Court of Appeal initially restored the SLC management led by Shammi Silva, the Sri Lankan parliament later passed a unanimous resolution advocating the removal of the SLC, with support from both ruling and opposition parties. Despite these developments, the ICC has decided to allow Sri Lanka to continue participating in international cricket.
ICC Allows Sri Lanka to Participate in International Cricket Despite Suspension
In a recent board meeting, the International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed that the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team will continue to partake in both bilateral cricket and ICC events despite the suspension imposed. However, the funding for Sri Lanka Cricket will be overseen by the ICC. Consequently, the Under-19 Cricket World Cup scheduled for next year has been relocated from Sri Lanka to South Africa.
The official ICC media release stated, “After hearing representation from SLC, the ICC Board decided that Sri Lanka can continue to compete internationally both in bilateral cricket and ICC events after being suspended recently for breaching its obligations as a Member in particular the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and without government interference.”
While international competition remains open to Sri Lanka, the ICC emphasized its control over funding, ensuring adherence to stipulated terms. Additionally, the ICC Board confirmed the relocation of the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024 from Sri Lanka to South Africa.
