After taking retirement from T20Is and Tests, there is no clarity about Rohit Sharma's future in the One Day International cricket format. Sharma's childhood coach, Dinesh Lad, who knows his student very well, may be able to decode the former Test player's next move. Dinesh believes that Rohit is still hungry for winning trophies like before.
In a conversation, Dinesh Lad claimed that whatever Rohit does has a proper backup plan. When he walked away from the T20Is, right after winning the ICC T20I World Cup, he shifted his focus towards the ICC ODI World Cup and World Test Championship (WTC). In the 2023 ODI World Cup, India played extremely well and reached the final. But there, they lost the tournament decider.
Also exactly what happened during the last WTC cycle. The men in the Blue Brigade were one of the leading contenders to grab a ticket to the WTC final. But, in a crucial moment, back-to-back defeats did not allow them to play the final match in the Whites. Rohit retired from Test and left himself available only for ODIs.
Goal is to win the 2027 WC
"When Rohit retired from T20I, he didn’t retire from Tests and ODIs because he still wanted to win the WTC and the ODI WC, which we lost in 2023. Unfortunately, we couldn’t reach the 2025 WTC final, so he retired from Tests. Now, his only goal is to play ODIs and win the 2027 World Cup, after which he plans to retire," Sharma's childhood coach said.
There are now some speculations about the Mumbaikar's future in the ODI format as well. It'll be interesting to see if the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) considers him for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 or not. There are some reports claiming that the board can arrange a meeting with Virat Kohli and Rohit ahead of the prestigious tournament. If Rohit gets the chance to play in the tournament, then he will definitely try to make some big runs to prove he still has gas left in the tank.
