Suryakumar Yadav is struggling for form in IPL 2026

Despite the joyful news in his personal life, IPL 2026 has turned out to be a difficult season so far for Suryakumar Yadav. The Mumbai Indians star batter has faced heavy criticism from fans and experts alike for failing to make a significant impact, with the five-time champions currently placed near the bottom of the points table after managing just three wins from nine matches.

The Indian T20I captain has scored only 195 runs in 10 matches this season at a strike rate below 150. Known for his aggressive 360-degree batting style, Suryakumar has often lost his wicket while attempting risky shots during crucial moments of the tournament. His struggles have reflected in Mumbai Indians’ inconsistent performances throughout the campaign.

Interestingly, one of the biggest changes in Suryakumar’s batting this season has been the decline in his scoring behind square on the leg side. Over the last five IPL seasons, he regularly scored more than a quarter of his runs in that region, including 27.8 percent during his record-breaking 2025 campaign. However, that number has dropped to just 17.4 percent in IPL 2026.

The dip has also affected his strike rate in that area of the field. Across his IPL career, Suryakumar has maintained a strike rate close to 200 through backward square leg, but this season it has fallen sharply to 144.44. In his first 10 innings, he has already been dismissed four times while targeting that region — twice while attempting sweep shots against spin and twice while hooking or pulling short deliveries against pace bowlers.
