The 32nd match of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 took place between New Zealand vs Uganda at Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba in Trinidad on Jun 14, 08:30 PM local. New Zealand registered a comfortable win over Uganda. Tim Southee claimed 3 wickets, and Boult, Santner and Rachin Ravindra picked up 2 wickets each before Devon Conway’s quickfire knock sealed the deal.
New Zealand won the toss and opted to bowl first. Put into bat first, Uganda had a poor start. Their openers Ronak Patel and Simon Ssesazi failed to get going as they got out for a mere 1 and 0 runs respectively because of Santner and Boult’s early strikes. Soon Tim Southee removed Alpesh Ramjani for a 6-ball duck and Robinson Obuya was removed by Trent Boult for a golden duck and they started struggling at 10 for 4 after 6.5 overs.
K Waiswa tried to build a partnership in the middle but didn’t get any support from the other end. No batter could reach the double-digit, courtesy of an exceptional bowling effort from New Zealand bowlers as well. However, inexperienced Uganda crumbled under pressure as they haven’t played much against quality pace and swing bowling before.

However, Mitchell Santner bowled beautifully in the middle overs whereas Ferguson too put them under pressure with his lethal pace. The Uganda batters failed to rotate strikes regularly which cost them as well. While Tim Southee claimed 3 wickets conceding only 4 runs, Boult, Santner and Rachin Ravindra picked up 2 wickets each and bowled them out for 40 runs in 18.4 overs.
Notably, Uganda registered the second-most lowest team totals in the Men’s T20 World Cup today whereas Tim Southee also registered the most economical 4-over spells in the Men’s T20 World Cup as well.
While chasing, New Zealand got off to a flying start. Openers Finn Allen and Devon Conway took no time to attack the inexperienced bowling attack. They added 24 runs in 4.2 overs before Riazat Ali Shah picked up the first and only wicket of the innings in the form of Allen who scored 9.
However, Devon Conway remained unbeaten on 22 and reached the target in 5.1 overs. With this, New Zealand got off the mark in the marquee event as well.
Tim Southee said: It was a pretty clinical performance, was nice to get a win. It has been a bit tricky, just try to hit the stumps with variable bounce. Disappointed to find ourselves out of the tournament. We were outplayed in the first two games, we have a proud record in World Cups and that has now come to an end. Had a nice break heading into this World Cup. Always a dream to play for NZ, still enjoying it.
