Mitchell Marsh suffering internal testicular bleeding
Earlier this week, Aussie captain Mitchell Marsh got a blow to the groin, and due to this injury, he has missed their tournament opener. While he was in pain and discomfort that restricted his movement, the scans confirmed internal testicular bleeding. Cricket Australia (CA) also confirmed that the all-rounder needs a period of rest and rehabilitation, while his return to the tournament is yet to be confirmed.
The CA stated, "Marsh is experiencing ongoing pain and discomfort which is restricting his movement. Scans have confirmed internal testicular bleeding, and he will require a period of rest and rehabilitation. His return to play will be guided by symptom resolution and medical advice."
Steven Smith can play important role for Australia
Meanwhile, Steven Smith has been added to the squad as a standby, who is on his way to Sri Lanka.
The absence of Mitchell Marsh is a big blow for Australia, who has a huge amount of experience, along with strong leadership qualities. If Marsh is later ruled out of the tournament, they need strong leadership and playing character, and Steven Smith can be a perfect choice for it, even if he does not officially take the leadership role on the field.
