Watch: “Three months left…” – Yuvraj Singh recalls moment he was diagnosed with cancer
The former Indian World Cup-winner, Yuvraj Singh, has recalled the moment when he was first diagnosed with cancer ahead of the West Indies and England tour in 2011.

It was during the 2011 ODI World Cup match against the West Indies at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai that an ailing Yuvraj Singh, suffering from an undetected cancer, vomited blood and battled nausea in the heat as he fought his way to a fine knock of 113 runs in 123 balls, besides picking two wickets, which led them to victory.
When the drinks came, the advice for him was to leave the field. But Yuvraj told the umpire, Simon Taufel, that he would not leave the field despite his severe health issues. He was later rewarded the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his incredible all-round performances.

Away from the craze of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, In the recent interview on ‘Overlap Cricket, Yuvraj has revealed that it was just before the West Indies and England tour in 2011 when he was very close to coming into the Test side after the retirement of Sourav Ganguly. He reckoned that he wanted to do everything to be part of the game.
“I was in Delhi when I found out. We were about to go on a two-and-a-half-month tour each to the West Indies and England. Ganguly had just retired, and suddenly my place had opened up to play Test cricket.” Yuvraj expressed in the video.

“I was waiting for seven years for my spot, and I was like, 'I don’t care, man, if I die, I want that spot. As a sportsman, you don’t think about being sick; you’re supposed to play for India. But eventually, I got sicker and sicker playing cricket.” The spin all-rounder addressed.
Former India star reflects on battle with cancer
The Punjab-born also revealed that the doctor gave him a deadline of three to six months on his hands to live if the all-rounder would take the cricketing route and play rather than taking chemotherapy.

“Doctor said, “Mate, I looked at your scan, and the tumor is sitting between your heart and lung. Either you go and play cricket, or you might have a heart attack. I think you’ve got three to six months left if you don’t do chemotherapy.” Yuvraj added.
He was diagnosed with a rare lung cancer, specifically a mediastinal seminoma, which is a germ cell tumor located between his lungs. He underwent intense treatment in the USA, including three cycles of chemo, which caused him to lose muscle mass and gain weight.
