TNCA to name Chepauk stands after Ashwin and 2 TN players

In a significant development, the legendary former Indian spin all-rounder, Ravichandran Ashwin, is set to be honoured by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA). He is going to get a new stand named after him at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Reports have claimed that Ashwin will be honoured alongside two more players of the state, who are also going to get a stand named after them at the Chepauk. The state association is trying to make the needful arrangements ahead of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2026/27 opening clash.

Reports have added that along with Ashwin, the former Indian greats, S Venkataraghavan and Krish Srikkanth, are also going to be honoured. The ceremony is set to be held in the presence of all three players together during the historic BBL clash in Chennai towards the end of the year.

Notably, the BBL is arriving in India as the Chepauk will host the very first game of the T20 Premier League of Australia. Ashwin, who retired from international cricket in 2024, picked up 779 wickets in 292 innings of first-class cricket, besides collecting 5415 runs in 228 innings at 27.62 with eight centuries and 25 fifties.

Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan, who featured in 96 Test innings for the Indian side to celebrate 156 wickets at an average of 36.11, has picked up 1390 wickets in 341 games of first-class cricket with the help of 85 five-wicket hauls at the best figures of 9/93 in an innings.

Srikkanth, on the other hand, has collected 7349 runs in 213 innings of first-class cricket at an average of 34.99 with 12 centuries and 45 fifties at the best score of 172.

The opening BBL 2026 game will be played at the Chepauk Stadium on December 12 when the defending champions, Perth Scorchers, will take on the Melbourne Renegades. The tournament will head back to Australia on December 15, with the Brisbane Heat facing the Sydney Sixers on December 15.

The Chepauk will next host a game on October 18 during the Ranji Trophy against Uttarakhand. It will also stage the clash against the Railways on October 26.

For the Indian side, the Shubman Gill-led side will face Australia during the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2026/27 at this venue between January 29 and February 02. The venue will then host the IPL 2027 clashes of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
