Top 3 Reasons why Lucknow Super Giants Lost to Delhi Capitals in IPL 2025 Match 40

LSG’s batting collapsed to 160/8, with Pant and the top order failing against DC’s Mukesh Kumar (4 wickets). Poor bowling and tactics let DC’s Porel and Rahul (50+ each) chase 161/2 in 17.5 overs.

In IPL 2025 Match 40, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), led by Rishabh Pant, fell by eight wickets to Delhi Capitals (DC) at Ekana Cricket Stadium on 22 April, 2025. DC chased LSG's 160/8 after 20 overs in just 17.5 overs, finishing at 161/2. Below are the main reasons for LSG's defeat:

1. Poor Batting Performance and Early Collapse:

The Lucknow Supergiants collapsed with the bat against the Delhi Capitals, only posting a total of 160/8 in their 20-over innings on a red-soil pitch, which turned out to be highly spin-friendly. Several early wickets put Lucknow behind the eight-ball, and key players like Pant failed to produce results (106 runs in seven innings). Delhi Capitals Mukesh Kumar took the most advantage, obtaining 4 wickets and removing multiple framers and batsmen who contributed heavily to the Lucknow Supergiants’ innings.

2. Ineffective Bowling Strategy Against DC's Chase:

The bowling effort by Lucknow Supergiants was ineffective and failed to restrict a total of 160. Their opposition scored 161.5 in 17.5 overs. Even though Aiden Markram obtained two wickets, their entire pace and spin attack, which consisted of Ravi Bishnoi and Avesh Khan, was off-target and unthreatening. In the end, Lucknow's captain Pant was unable to enable his team to enact better strategies against the run-scoring duo of DC’s Abishek Porel and KL Rahul, who both scored 50+ runs.

3. Questionable Team Selection and Tactical Decisions:

Certain line-up and planning decisions made by Lucknow lead to them not winning the match. A lack of use of Ayush Badoni, who can be decisive in the role of impact substitute and is reliable as a finisher. Various batting orders with Pant free-falling to the bottom of the order also reduced Lucknow’s chance for success. Contrastingly, any lull in action or pace from their own bowlers was made worse by Lucknow never adapting to the bowling strategies of Delhi, matching the performance of Mukesh Kumar over his two spells, or whether that changing pace/missing the pace of Mayank Yadav from injury/location even when well-planned in strategist plans.
