Star Indian batter Virat Kohli had an outstanding year in 2025. It was a year in which he won many trophies and also retired from Test cricket. He announced his retirement from Tests on May 12, after playing 123 matches. In those matches, he scored 9,230 runs, including 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries.

Kohli was also part of the Indian team that won the 2025 Champions Trophy under captain Rohit Sharma. He also enjoyed success in franchise cricket, as Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won the IPL 2025 title.

The Delhi-born batter ended the year on a high by winning the Player of the Series award. He scored 302 runs in three innings in the three-match home series against South Africa, which India won 2-1.

1. Virat Kohli Becomes Fastest to 14,000 ODI Runs

During India’s 2025 Champions Trophy match against Pakistan, Virat Kohli starred for the Men in Blue, remaining unbeaten on 100 off 111 balls as India chased 242 to win by six wickets.

In the process, Kohli became only the third player to score 14,000 runs in ODIs and the fastest to reach the milestone, doing it in just 287 innings. He surpassed Sachin Tendulkar, who had reached the mark in 350 innings.

2. Becomes Second-Highest Run-Scorer in ODIs

In the third and final ODI of the series against Australia on October 25 in Sydney, Kohli played a calm innings of 74 not out off 81 balls, helping India to a nine-wicket victory.

During this match, he surpassed former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara (14,234 runs) to become the second-highest run-scorer in ODI cricket.

3. Sets Record for Most Centuries in a Single Format

In the first ODI of the three-match series against South Africa on November 30 in Ranchi, Kohli scored 135 off 120 balls, including 11 fours and seven sixes. This was his 52nd ODI century.

With this hundred, Kohli set a new record for the most centuries in a single format, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar, who had 51 centuries in Test cricket.

4. First Player to Score 1,000 Runs in ICC Knockout Matches

During the 2025 Champions Trophy, Kohli scored 85 runs across two knockout matches, including a half-century. He became the first player to score 1,000 runs in ICC knockout matches, including the ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup, Champions Trophy, and World Test Championship final.

Overall, Kohli has played 24 knockout innings, scoring 1,024 runs at an average of 48.76, with nine fifties and one century. His highest score of 117 came against New Zealand in the 2023 ODI World Cup semi-final.

5. Most Catches by an Indian Fielder

In the 2025 Champions Trophy semi-final against Australia, Kohli added another milestone to his career. By taking the catch of Josh Inglis, he surpassed Rahul Dravid (334) to become the Indian fielder with the most outfield catches across formats.

Kohli has now taken 342 catches in 665 innings, the most by an Indian and the fifth-highest in international cricket, behind Mahela Jayawardene (440), Ricky Ponting (364), Ross Taylor (354), and Steve Smith (343).
