Despite their second successive victory in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at their home venue, the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain, Shreyas Iyer, has been fined for a major offence, which has had a significant impact.

Along with captain Shreyas Iyer, who was fined a massive price for the offence, the entire team of 11 players and the impact player have also been fined a huge portion of their match fees. However, that didn’t make any difference to their points table and standing in the IPL 2026.

Shreyas Iyer fined INR 24 lakh for slow-over rate

It was towards the end of the first innings during the clash against CSK when the two on-field umpires forced Iyer to put an extra fielder into the 30-yard circle for the slow over rate. That incident took place during the 18th over of the innings as the Punjab side didn’t get the fifth fielder outside the circle for the last 12 balls.

Shivam Dube was at the crease and took full advantage of it as he went hard against the visiting bowlers around the park and earned 23 runs off the last two overs and made their way to 209 runs for the loss of five wickets in their allotted 20 overs. This was also a part of the game that they didn’t make leg spinner, Yuzvendra Chahal, bowl his last and fourth over despite having 1/21 in his three overs.

Iyer has been fined INR 24 lakh for the slow over-rate as this is the team’s second offence for which the rest of the playing XI, including the Impact Player, Priyansh Arya, the adjusted ‘Player of the Match, have been fined INR 6 lakh or 25% of the match fees (whichever is lesser).

Punjab Kings begin IPL 2026 with successive victories

Chennai raced their way to 209 runs in 20 overs. Their number three batter, Ayush Mhatre, smashed a fine knock of 73 runs in 43 balls with the help of six boundaries and five sixes at a strike rate of nearly 170. Meanwhile, Sarfaraz Khan contributed with 32 runs in just 12 balls, scoring on six boundaries and one six, as Shivam Dube remained undefeated on 45 runs in 27 balls, thanks to five boundaries and one six.

Punjab completed the chase by five wickets with eight balls to spare. Iyer clubbed a dashing knock of 50 runs in just 29 balls, while the biggest contribution came from Arya’s 39 runs in 11 balls, thanks to three boundaries and four sixes. Cooper Connolly also scored 36 runs in 22 balls for a strike rate of 163.34.
