India came into the second Test of the two-match series against South Africa with a defeat of 30 runs in the opening clash at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Their regular captain, Shubman Gill, was ruled out of the clash due to a neck injury, as Rishabh Pant was selected as the replacement leader of the second Test at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.

But things didn’t go as the home side perhaps planned. The Proteas posted a massive score of 489 runs in the first innings with several top-order batters getting starts and Senuran Muthusamy clubbing 109 runs in 206 balls, while Marco Jansen collected 93 runs in 91 balls with the bat. Simon Harmer and Jansen shared nine wickets between them to blow away the Blue Brigade for 201 runs.

The importance for the visitors was to score runs quickly; Tristan Stubbs’ 94 runs, along with Tony de Zorzi’s 49 runs, set a massive target of 549 runs for the hosts to chase in the fourth innings.

In the fourth innings, it was clearly a surrender from the host as only Ravindra Jadeja notched up a fine knock of 54 runs in 87 balls before they got bundled out for 140 and faced the 408-run loss to lose the series by a 0-2 margin.
