"Up to BCCI..."- Gautam Gambhir reacts to his future as India's head coach post 0-2 series defeat against South Africa
The head coach of the Indian cricket team, Gautam Gambhir, has reacted to his future on the role and left it to this post their massive 408-run defeat against South Africa in Guwahati Test to experience another whitewash.

The Indian head coach, Gautam Gambhir, faced some tough questions in the post-match press conference at the end of their massive 408-run defeat during the second game at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, which led to the Blue Brigade’s second home Test series whitewash in successive years.
Gambhir faced a question on whether he would step down from his position as head coach after his disappointing performance, to which the former opener reminded how the same side under him was successful in winning the Champions Trophy 2025 and Asia Cup 2025, besides going decent in England.
“It is for the BCCI to decide. I have said this before as well, Indian cricket is important, I am not important. I am the same guy who got results in England, won the Champions Trophy, and the Asia Cup. This is a team that is learning. The blame lies with everyone and starts with me. We need to play better. From 95/1 to 122/7 is not acceptable. You don't blame any individual or any particular shot.” Gambhir expressed during the presser.

India came into the Guwahati Test after their 30-run surrender at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, where they failed to chase down the 124-run target and ended up on the floor. The same trend continued even in the second clash, where their batters had no answer against the stiff bounce of lanky Marco Jansen and Simon Harmer’s off-spin on a surface where the visiting batters applied themselves well against the home spinners.
“Blame lies with everyone. I never blamed individuals and won't do it going forward. You don't need the most flamboyant and talented cricketers to play Test cricket. What we need are tough characters with limited skills. They make good Test cricketers.” Gambhir addressed the presser.
“Start prioritizing Test cricket, if you are really serious about Test cricket. If you are serious about Test cricket in India, a collective effort is required. You cannot blame only players or a certain individual,” The Indian coach concluded.
