While India suffered a shocking 30-run defeat in the low-scoring Kolkata Test battle against South Africa, the hosts hugely missed their captain Shubman Gill in both innings, who missed out on batting due to a neck injury. After several hours of India's shocking Kolkata Test defeat, here is a crucial update on the Indian skipper.

Shubman Gill unable to bat in Kolkata Test due to neck injury

During the second day of the Kolkata Test, Indian captain Shubman Gill felt uncomfortable in his neck while batting. After hitting a four, Gill felt discomfort in his neck, and the physio attended to him immediately. Later, it was known that Gill had trouble with his neck even during the practice session before the beginning of the day. The Indian captain played only three balls in India's first innings of the Kolkata Test before retiring hurt, and was taken to the hospital in a cervical collar as a precaution.

Later, the BCCI updated that Gill had a neck spasm and is being monitored by the medical team. It also added that his participation on that day (also assuming for the game) would be taken as per his progress. However, later, it was confirmed that the Indian skipper was ruled out of the game, while he was under observation in the hospital. In both innings, India missed him a lot, as there was no replacement available for that injury. The hosts literally played with nine wickets in both innings, and it cost them a lot on the toughest batting pitch.

According to the India Today report, the medical updates have confirmed that the pain has been reduced considerably, while Gill can walk and move his neck.

The BCCI medical team is closely monitoring Gill's fitness status, as the next few days are crucial to decide whether he can participate in the Guwahati Test, starting on November 22.
