For more than a decade, both the former Indian captains, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, have been the pillars of the white-ball dominance of world cricket. But with both icons retiring from the longest and shortest formats of the game, questions have been raised about whether they would be able to participate in the upcoming ODI World Cup 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

The reports have claimed that the upcoming three-match 50-over series in late autumn against Australia down under might not turn out to be another challenge for the duo. This could prove to be the last bite of the dice. It could well turn out to be the emotional international retirement of both giants of Indian cricket.

The reports have also addressed that if they want to extend their ODI career till 2027, then they are expected to commit to the domestic schedule, which means participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26 later this year in December. Those games for Delhi and Mumbai will keep them in shape and rhythm of the 50-over format before the ICC tournament.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to return in Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26: Reports

Kohli’s record in ODIs is unmatchable, with the right-handed batter being the third leading run-getter of the format with 14181 runs in 290 innings at an average of 57.88 and a strike rate of nearly 94, with the help of 51 centuries and 74 half-centuries at the best score of 183 runs. He will potentially eventually get past Kumar Sangakkara in the list during their Australia trip.

Rohit is tenth on the list. The Nagpur-born has clubbed 11168 runs in 265 innings at an average of 48.76 and a strike rate of 92.80, scoring 32 centuries and 58 half-centuries at the best score of 264 against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

If they do play the VHT 2025-26, then they can carry forward the momentum into the three-match ODI series against New Zealand at home. This could be the only 50-over game they will get in the first six months of 2026, with the T20 World Cup and IPL 2026 to follow.
