Former Indian batsman Wasim Jaffer has thrown his support behind Virat Kohli to rediscover his form during the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, especially as the tournament progresses into the Super 8 stage. Notably, Kohli has been experiencing a slump with the bat, having managed just five runs from three matches in the tournament thus far. His scores of 1 (4), 4 (3), and a golden duck against Ireland, Pakistan, and the USA respectively highlight his current struggles.
Fans are taken aback by his sudden slump, especially considering his stellar performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. While opening for RCB, the right-handed batsman amassed an impressive 741 runs from 15 innings, boasting an average of 61.75 and a strike rate of 154.69. Nonetheless, the 35-year-old has struggled to mirror that form in the current tournament.
Reflecting on India’s performance following their commanding seven-wicket victory over the USA, Jaffer expressed satisfaction with the middle order’s resurgence heading into the Super 8 stage. Additionally, he reiterated his confidence in Virat Kohli’s ability to regain his form for the upcoming matches.
“They played exceptionally well, and crucial aspects of their game fell into place during this match. Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube showcased their batting prowess, and Arshdeep’s performance with the new ball was commendable. While Jasprit Bumrah has led the bowling attack, Arshdeep’s contribution becomes pivotal, especially as we transition to the West Indies leg and potentially consider altering the pace bowling lineup,” Jaffer stated on Star Sports.
“Likely, Arshdeep will be the pick, with Siraj possibly sitting out. There are many positives for the Indian team, and they’re hitting their stride. Despite Virat Kohli’s current run drought, rest assured, when the Super 8s arrive, the big man will deliver,” he remarked.
India secured a commanding seven-wicket victory over the USA, chasing down 111 runs in 18.2 overs, propelled by a half-century from Suryakumar Yadav (50* off 49) and a determined unbeaten 31* (35) from Shivam Dube. Left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh was named the Player of the Match for achieving the best-ever bowling figures by an Indian in T20 World Cup history, claiming 4/9 in four overs. India’s next encounter is against Canada on Saturday, June 15, their final Group A fixture. Despite already securing qualification for the Super 8s, the Men in Blue will be eager for Kohli to rediscover his form ahead of the pivotal phase of the tournament.
