India’s most brutal opening batter, Abhishek Sharma, has been in fine touch during the shortest format as he continued the same dominance in their 118-run chase in the third T20I against South Africa at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala. Even in the swinging conditions, he used his power to nail the first ball six.

The first ball from Lungi Ngidi was a back-of-a-length delivery on the leg side of Abhishek, who pulled it over the fine leg region and got going in style. A ball later, he glanced the ball into the leg side for a boundary. On the fifth ball, he advanced down the track to smack his over covers.

It was the third successive time when Indian batters hit a six in the first ball of a T20I innings. Abhishek Sharma celebrated the feat against Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haider Ali during the Asia Cup 2025. He advanced down the wicket to loft Marco Jansen over the deep cover for another six.

Shubman Gill, who has struggled in the first couple of games of the event and was in much need to break the shackles, contributed equally with a flurry of boundaries and sixes. Abhishek celebrated the fifties of the Indian side in just 4.1 overs with a six, as he slashed it over the deep region.

But he was finally dismissed for 35 runs in 18 balls at a strike rate of just under 200 with the help of three boundaries and three sixes. It was a back-of-a-length delivery from Corbin Bosch as the southpaw’s cut shot flew in the air with Aiden Markram running backwards to grab the catch.

Earlier in the innings, the Proteas were bundled out for only 117 runs in 20 overs. Captain Aiden Markram smashed 61 runs in 46 balls at a strike rate of 132.61, thanks to six boundaries and two sixes with four Indian bowlers, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, Varun Chakravarthy, and Kuldeep Yadav, ending with two wickets each in the innings.
