Amanjot Kaur’s stunning catch dismisses Laura Wolvaardt on 101.

For India to defend their first innings score of 298 runs during the Women’s World Cup 2025 final at the DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai against South Africa, their very first job was to dismiss the opponent captain, Laura Wolvaardt, who was in fine touch during the semifinal and celebrated another century in the final.

The Proteas kept losing wickets on one end, but the glue was their leader, who stood there and had the ambition of taking the Rainbow Nation home. The right-handed batter looked a bit tired towards the end of the knock before she decided to go hard against Deepti Sharma on 101.

Wolvaardt missed the slog sweep as the ball only ballooned in the air. The deep mid-wicket fielder, Amanjot Kaur, who had a nightmarish evening by then with the ball, ran rapidly and grabbed the catch. In doing so, she lost her balance and almost dropped the ball, but she held her composure and completed the fine catch to send it back to Laura.

India posted 298/7 in their allotted 50 overs of the first innings, thanks to the fine knock of Shafali Verma at the opening position. She smashed 87 runs in 78 deliveries with the help of seven boundaries and two sixes at a strike rate of 111.54, while Deepti Sharma clubbed 58 runs in 58 balls at a strike rate of 100, riding on three boundaries and one six.

Laura Wolvaardt smacked 101 runs in 98 balls at a strike rate of 103.06. But she didn’t get support from any player. Annerie Derksen bashed 35 runs in 37 balls at a strike rate of 94.59. Deepti Sharma picked up five wickets for 39 runs in 9.3 overs at an economy rate of 4.10.

At the end, Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain of the Indian women's side, grabbed a fine catch and set off on a winning ride as the Blue Brigade India won their maiden Women’s World Cup in the third edition.
