The million-dollar question going into the 2026 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is whether MS Dhoni will feature for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) next year. The right-handed batter had already given up the leadership two years ago, handing over the duties to the young opening batter of the franchise, Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has earned massive success in little time.

Last year, Gaikwad didn’t play the IPL after the first couple of years due to the hand injury he picked up against the Rajasthan Royals in the second week. In that instance, Dhoni returned to lead the franchise but couldn’t do well as the five-time champions ended at the bottom of the points table with only four victories in 14 games at a net run rate of -0.647.

Two days before the retention of the IPL 2026, the Chennai Super Kings dropped a Morse code in a special video on whether Dhoni would return for the next season. Breaking the code, it has been known that the wicket-keeper would come back, and it could be the last time he would don the yellow jersey.

Dhoni, who smashed a total of 5439 runs in 242 innings of the IPL at an average of nearly 39 at a strike rate of 137.45 with the help of 24 half-centuries at the best score of unbeaten 84 runs against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, hasn’t been able to find the same success in the previous few seasons. He got only 196 runs at a strike rate of 135.17 last year.

Dhoni has already started the practice session in the gym, besides spending time in the pool and batting for four hours per day. He would be looking to put up a strong performance with the bat in 2026.

There is news of CSK bringing Sanju Samson in the squad for the new season as Ravindra Jadeja, the long-time servant of the franchise, and the pace-bowling all-rounder, Sam Curran, would move to the Rajasthan Royals.
