The star all-rounder of the Indian women, Deepti Sharma, has lauded the star player of their country for the one-handed six that he played during the recent opening ODI game against England women at the Rose Bowl ground in Southampton. She ended up as the leading run-getter of the game for India to bail the tourists out of trouble in crunch situations.

It was the third ball of the 38th over of the 259-run chase when Laurn Bell went for a full-length delivery outside the off-stump. The left-handed batter, Deepti Sharma, played a big slog sweep with one hand and shocked it over the deep mid-wicket region for a six, using the bottom hand in generating the power to the shot. She credited Rishabh Pant for such shots.

'I play these shots in practice, and I pick that up from Rishabh Pant. We have played in England before, and we enjoy these conditions.Sharma addressed the end of India’s four-wicket victory to go 0-1 up in the three-match series before the second fixture on July 19 at Lord’s.

After India’s 3-2 series victory against England in the T20Is, the focus shifted to the 50-over fixtures. The home side lost two wickets in the first four overs for 20 runs. Emma Lamb and captain Nat Sciver-Brunt got their respective starts in the innings, but neither of them was able to celebrate half-centuries. Sophia Dunkley smashed a fine knock of 83 runs in 92 balls while Davidson Richards nailed 53 runs in 73 balls to take them to 258.

India were never in the chase from the start. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals, with most of their batters not being able to convert their starts. Jamimah Rodrigues smashed 48 runs in 54 balls, but it was needed for someone to stay longer in the middle. Deepti walked out and drilled a fine knock of 62 runs in 64 balls at a strike rate of 96.58 with the help of three boundaries and one six. Amanjot Kaur nailed an unbeaten 20 runs to carry them home with four wickets in hand.

Deepti, who has withdrawn her name from The Hundred 2025 due to a break before a long domestic season, will hope to carry the same momentum in the series.
