New Zealand has always taken pride in its excellent fielding performance, and Glenn Phillips has continued to stand out in that department during the T20 World Cup 2026 for their second encounter against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

On the fifth delivery of the powerplay in the first innings, Muhammad Waseem smashed a fine shot. It was dragged short from the Blackcaps captain, Mitchell Santner, as the batter premediated the sweep shot and adjusted quickly to pull the ball in front of the square region. On any ground against any team, the ball would have got to the boundary in a flash.

But that was when Glenn Phillips showed his class. He rushed into that position and sprinted to his right before diving full length and made the stop to save a couple. It hasn’t been the first time a fielder has stopped an outrageous boundary, and it won’t be the last time he replicates such a fielding performance.

New Zealand started really well in the powerplay with the early wicket of Aryansh Sharma, the wicket-keeper batter, who was dismissed for eight runs in six balls as he failed to pull the short ball and was dismissed at the end. But that was when Waseem and Alishan Sharafu put up a fine partnership of 107 runs for the second wicket.

Watch the video here:

Their number three batter, Alishan Sharafu, smashed a fine knock of 55 runs in 47 balls with the help of five boundaries and a couple of sixes at a strike rate of 117.02 before going back to the hut thanks to a fine acrobatic catch at the boundary rope by Mark Chapman and Daryl Mitchell.

Waseem also batted really well for his strike rate of over 135 for his fifty runs as he smashed three boundaries and two sixes. The biggest momentum shift into the innings came from the 18 overs as they earned 27 runs in six balls.

Brief Scores: UAE 164/4 (Muhammad Waseem 64*, Alishan Sharafu 55, Jacob Duffy 1/16) vs New Zealand.
