South Africa’s premier pacer, Marizanne Kapp, who began her Women’s World Cup journey in 2009, went through the event in five editions, with the 2025 season marking her last. She ended up as the runner-up of the event with South Africa, who lost the final against a strong Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian side at the DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai.

Kapp was in tremendous form in this event. In most of the games, she picked up wickets with the new ball using the swing and seam movement of the new ball as she bagged a five-wicket haul against England during the first semifinal at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. She ended the tournament with 12 wickets in nine innings at an average of 20.25 and a strike rate of 29.

After the end of the final, Kapp was seen to be hugged by the Indian players, including Harleen Deol and Jemimah Rodrigues. She was in tears and rightly so, having gone through a hard campaign for the last four weeks, but remaining a step away from lifting the title.

When Kapp picked up five wickets in the semifinal, the eyes were on her to do the same damage in the final against India. But that wasn’t the case anyway, and gave away 59 runs in 10 overs at an economy rate of 5.90 with a maiden.

India posted 298 runs in 50 overs, after their 21-year-old opening batter, Shafali Varma, smashed 87 runs in 78 balls at a strike rate of 111.54 with the help of seven boundaries and two sixes, while Deepti Sharma clubbed 58 runs at a run-a-ball in the middle order with three fours and one six.

For the Proteas, Laura Wolvaardt smacked 101 runs in 98 balls at a strike rate of 103.06 with 11 boundaries and one six. But none of this was enough to help them chase the target, and they got bundled out for 245 runs in 45.3 overs as Deepti picked up five wickets.
