Shubman Gill, for the last few weeks, including the recently concluded home South Africa series, went through a lean patch with the bat, which saw him lose his place with Ishan Kishan leapfrogging him for the T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka. Not many saw that coming, but this was bound to happen at some stage.

Just minutes after the announcement of the squad by the selection committee in the presence of captain Suryakumar Yadav, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Davajit Saikia, Kishan interacted with the media and revealed his emotions on return to the side.

“Yeah, very happy (to be back). Thank you. I know, and yeah, thanks to the appreciation. The entire team played really well (on Jharkhand winning the SMAT 2025/26),” Kishan expressed to ANI in the recent meeting. He ended the event with 517 runs in ten matches at an average of over 50 and a strike rate of nearly 200 with two centuries and as many fifties.

Kishan can be a fine option at the top in the opening position with Abhishek Sharma, his current teammate for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He can also be the wicket-keeper, which means the management can choose between Rinku Singh and Washington Sundar in the middle.

“He bats at the top in white-ball cricket, and he’s been in good form. He played before for India. He wasn’t in the Indian team because there is a Dhruv Jurel and Rishabh Pant ahead of him. We felt a ‘keeper at the top gives us more solidity.” Agarkar expressed in the press conference.

“If your ‘keeper is going to bat at the top, our thought was to have another ‘keeper, just in case there’s a problem. There was Jitesh, who again hasn’t done too much wrong, (the same as) Shubman. It’s about the combinations, more than anything,” The former Indian all-rounder highlighted.
