For the opening ODI of the three-match series at the Optus Stadium in Perth, one eye was on the former captain, Rohit Sharma, who was left out of the captaincy of India’s 50-over format, despite winning the Champions Trophy 2025 in March this year. There were concerns about whether he could find the same rhythm with the bat after a long time.

Rohit’s last competitive game in the middle came during the IPL 2025 for the Mumbai Indians. Since then, he announced his retirement from the longest format before the Test series against England in the United Kingdom. However, he looked fitter than ever, losing a few kgs with incredible fitness in the last couple of months.

However, the Nagpur-born couldn’t impress on his return and went back to the dressing room for eight runs. As expected, the right-handed opening batter looked a bit scratchy at the start of the innings before driving Mitchell Starc straight down the ground for a beautiful boundary, which would have increased his confidence. But it didn’t make a huge effect.

The first ball of the fourth over was on length from Josh Hazlewood to Rohit. On the following delivery, the opening batter looked to hoick the bowler across the line, but he failed to get a touch on it. For the third delivery, he was drawn forward as the bowler got it to nip away to beat the outside edge of the veteran.

On the fourth ball of the over, Hazlewood drew the first blood for Australia. It was a tad short of a good length for Rohit as the ball nibbled away a bit and got the outside edge of the Mumbai batter to end into the hands of the slip fielder.

It wasn’t a good start for India in the opening ODI as they lost two wickets in the first seven overs. Along with Rohit, Virat Kohli also failed to deliver on his return and went back to the hut for an eight-ball duck.
