Heading into the second ODI of the three-match series at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot between India and New Zealand, the pressure was on the visitors to earn a victory and level the series at 1-1, after a four-wicket defeat in the opening ODI at the VCA Stadium in Vadodara. The ground was hosting its first 50-over match since the series against Australia before the ODI World Cup 2023.

Chasing 285 runs in their 50 allotted overs, New Zealand did not get a sweet start with the bat as they lost both their inform opening batters, Devon Conway and Henry Nicholas, inside the first 13 overs. On both occasions, they bounced low and rolled onto the stumps after getting an edge of their bats.

Mitchell and Will Young put up a partnership of 162 runs for the third wicket, with the latter getting dismissed on 87 runs at a strike rate of nearly 89, thanks to his seven boundaries. However, Mitchell remained unbeaten on 131 runs in 117 deliveries with eleven boundaries and a couple of sixes to complete the chase by seven wickets.

He was well supported by Glenn Phillips, who clubbed a fine, undefeated knock of 32 runs in just 25 balls, thanks to his two boundaries and one six. Earlier in the clash, New Zealand’s right-arm pacer, Kristian Clarke, picked up three crucial wickets, including Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer, to break India’s back in the batting department.

It could have been odds had not KL Rahul celebrated an unbeaten knock of 112 runs in 92 deliveries, thanks to his 11 boundaries and 16 to shoulder them to 284 for the loss of seven wickets in the allotted 50 overs. s

Brief Scores: New Zealand 286/3 (Daryl Mitchell 131*, Will Young 87, Prasidh Krishna 1/49) beat India 284/7 (KL Rahul 112*, Shubman Gill 56, Kristian Clarke 3/56) by 7-wickets.
