The T20 World Cup 2007 victory against Pakistan at the Wanderers for the young captain, MS Dhoni-led side, was huge. It changed the dynamics of the game for the next 10 years, and most importantly, it gave birth to the Indian Premier League (IPL) a year later. It took the Blue Brigade another 17 years to get that trophy back in their cabinet.

The current T20I leader for India, Suryakumar Yadav, who will be captaining the side during the 2026 season of the World Cup at home, and Sri Lanka, looked back on the last ball when Dhoni walked up to Joginder Sharma to calm down his nerves before the latter bowled the last ball to Pakistan’s Misbah-Ul-Haq.

24th September, India-Pakistan final. I do remember a lot of things from that game, but the only highlight I have of that game is during the last over, Mahi bhai running to Joginder Sharma, calming his nerves during that pressure situation, and then him delivering, and Sreesanth taking that catch. I think it was a different moment altogether, and the whole of India celebrated it.Suryakumar Yadav expressed this during a video posted on Sony Sports Network.

India’s vice-captain of the shortest format, Shubman Gill, was, however, worried when Misbah scooped the last ball. Like many fans back home, the Punjab-born felt that it would cross the boundary rope before he saw Sreesanth under it.

“In the last over, and it was the last wicket, and I think five or six runs were needed. It was a very close game. So, I was feeling very tense. But when the batter scooped the ball and it went in the air, I actually thought it would go for a boundary. But seeing the fielder settling under it and watching him take the catch was just a pure moment of joy and happiness.Gill reckoned in the same video.

Currently, India has qualified for the final of the Asia Cup 2025 after their two Super 4 victories against Bangladesh and Pakistan. They will meet the winner of the two opponents for the final on September 28 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
