The Women’s Premier League 2026 kicked off with total mayhem, widespread notoriety and a finish that got straight away into the WPL legend. The first match between the Mumbai Indians Women and the Royal Challengers Bangalore Women at the DY Patil Stadium was full of everything - the turning of the tide, the failure to seize the opportunities and the heist in the last over that left the spectators in a state of disbelief.

RCB, while chasing the target of 158, started the innings with a lot of aggressive powerplay. But then Mumbai came back very fast and initiated a collapse which led RCB down to 65/5. With wickets falling and Required run-rate rising defending champions looked firmly in control as the pressure was mounting on the chasing side.

This was the moment when Nadine de Klerk took the next step and presented a beating that will be talked about for a long time. While holding her nerve and among the falling wickets, De Klerk was padding the innings and then going on to be a part of the last assault at the remaining time. RCB needed 18 runs going into the last over - a situation that was hugely in favour of Mumbai.

Nadine de Klerk's mind-blowing last-over performance not only turned the fate of RCB but also left Mumbai Indians in shock

The ball was given to Sciver-Brunt, but the script changed dramatically. De Klerk's phenomenal shot-making and a string of 6, 4, 6, 4 made this moment unforgettable as the Mumbai’s victory hopes were fading with each ball and finally a boundary off the last delivery sealed the win. Her 63 not out off 29 balls displayed poise, might, and top-notch finishing prowess.

Earlier, the team from Mumbai had scored runs quite well after the initial difficulties with the bat but their fielding errors turned out to be very costly. Later, the captain of the team Harmanpreet Kaur confessed that the difference was due to the dropped catches and the very close margins. On the contrary, the Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Smriti Mandhana acknowledged the team’s confidence and determination.

This exhilarating ending was a signal of the WPL's continued rise in popularity and prestige. One night, one over, and one amazing display of skill indeed turned the game around - this left the spectators overwhelmed and it was also the time for WPL 2026 to come!
