Shubman Gill’s stunning performance in the second Test against England has earned him comparisons with Indian greats Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. Former India cricketer Dinesh Karthik praised the young batter’s leadership and skill after Gill’s historic knock on Day 4 at Edgbaston. Gill became only the second Indian after Sunil Gavaskar to score a double century and a century in the same Test match.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Karthik pointed out that there had always been questions about Gill’s ability to score runs outside India. But he noted that the current Test series has changed that narrative completely. With three centuries in just four innings in the series so far, Gill has silenced all doubts about his overseas form and proved why he belongs on the biggest stage.

Karthik said, “Giving him captaincy was something that was talked about a lot. The one thing that was always spoken about was Shubman Gill needs to get runs away from India. He’s got the talent, but the statistics so far didn’t quite back that. This series has been everything he needed. He’s walking onto hallowed turf. Batting at number four—you had legends over decades: Tendulkar and then Kohli. Today, it is Shubman Gill.”

Karthik Says Gill Filling Big Shoes Well

Dinesh Karthik also appreciated how Gill has stepped up as captain, taking over from Rohit Sharma and handling the pressure with ease. He said that Gill’s calm and confident presence in the middle has been one of the biggest positives for India in the series so far.

“Those are big shoes to fill, and the way he’s walked in and taken charge along with captaincy has been the best part of this series from an Indian standpoint,” Karthik added, clearly impressed with both Gill’s leadership and his maturity with the bat.
