Rohit Sharma began his IPL 2026 campaign in excellent form at Wankhede Stadium. He scored a quick half-century in just 23 balls, marking his 50th score of 50 or more in IPL history. With this, he joined top players like Virat Kohli and David Warner.

This innings was special for another reason. It was Rohit’s fastest IPL fifty, beating his previous record of 25 balls, which he had set against Chennai Super Kings in 2015. He now stands among the players with the most 50+ scores, along with Shikhar Dhawan.

Rohit’s innings ended when Vaibhav Arora dismissed him. He scored 78 runs from 38 balls, hitting 6 fours and 6 sixes.

Rohit Sharma’s explosive innings sets the tone for MI

Rohit began his innings with a scratchy boundary off Blessing Muzarabani, but it was enough for him to take control of the game. The 38-year-old attacked Vaibhav Arora early, driving him over mid-wicket to signal his intent. With Ryan Rickelton at the other end, Rohit put the KKR bowling attack under constant pressure, finding runs with ease on the flat Wankhede pitch.

By the end of the power play, Mumbai had raced to 80, establishing control over their 220-run chase. Rohit reached his fifty on the final ball of the powerplay, completing the milestone in just 23 balls. This marked his fastest fifty in IPL history, surpassing his previous 25-ball effort against Chennai Super Kings in the 2015 final.

The former MI skipper was eventually dismissed for 78 runs off 38 balls, striking six fours and six sixes. He shared a 148-run partnership with Ryan Rickelton in just 71 balls. At the time of his dismissal, Mumbai required fewer than 9 runs per over from the original target rate of 11.

This was more than just a fifty. It was Rohit’s 50th score of 50 or more in IPL history, placing him alongside elite company — Virat Kohli (72), David Warner (66), and Shikhar Dhawan (53).
