It was a single to which Shubman Gill rushed into the other end with a loud and hard cheer of ‘come on’ as he celebrated his fourth century of this ongoing series between England and India at Old Trafford in Manchester. There were multiple talks when he became the captain of the red-ball side after Virat Kohli's retirement. Many questioned if he had the right temperament and skill to honor the badge.

Here he stands with authority at a place where run-scoring hasn’t been an easy job in Indian history. When he went after the two England openers with an aggressive mindset, many former players and pundits of the game dashed him with a speculation of him losing his charm with the bat.

But in Manchester, conceding a lead of over 310 runs, when he walked into the middle, they were 0/2 in the opening over. Since facing the hat-trick delivery to end the day’s play and again repeat the same grit, character, resilience, and patience, he celebrated his century. It was a knock that he would remember for a long time.

Gill has now become the third captain to score four centuries in a series. He shakes hands with Don Bradman, who did it against India in 1947/48 before Sunil Gavaskar touched the feat in 1978/79 against the West Indies. It took another 46 years for the record to get alive. That’s also the most centuries for a batter in a series.

Gavaskar got it twice in 1971 and 1978 against the West Indies, while Virat Kohli got it in 2014/15 against Australia. Gill has now equaled centuries in SENA countries as Ajinkya Rahane had in Tests, in 23 fewer games. In this process, he became the first Asian batter to cross the 700-run mark in a Test series in the SENA countries.

Thanks to his knock, India decreased the deficit to under 100 runs. They lost KL Rahul early in the game to a ball that just didn’t bounce at all and hit him on the knee roll. It will be the cherry on the top if they can draw the series and keep Kennington Oval alive.
