When Shubman Gill was announced as the new captain of the Indian side, replacing Rohit Sharma, who retired from the longest format between the IPL 2025 before the five-match Test series in England, many doubted him. The doubt increased when he was reported to take the number four position in the batting order after Virat Kohli’s retirement in the five-day format.

But he cracked runs with the bat in every single game of the first four fixtures, apart from the third encounter at Lord’s. At Edgbaston during the second game, he smashed a double century in the first innings and a 150 in the second innings to earn his first win as a leader for India to level the series at 1-1. By the end of the series, before the final game at Kennington Oval, he had taken the route to becoming a superstar.

Gill, between the break of the fourth Manchester and fifth London Test, was seen to be giving autographs to the kids in London. Along with giving signs, he was seen to give a few selfies to the fans on the road. He seemed to have already earned several young fans.

The Punjab-born is the leading run-getter of the series after four games with the help of 722 runs in eight innings at an average of 90.25 and a strike rate of 65.28, thanks to 79 boundaries and 12 sixes. The best knock of the series for him was the third innings century at Old Trafford when he batted four sessions after coming at 0/2 in the opening over.

Going into the fifth game, he could break the record of Sunil Gavaskar’s 774 runs in 1971 as the most runs by an Indian in a single Test series. Apart from that, he could break the record of Don Bradman to score over 800 runs in his first Test series as captain.

If India finishes the series with a 2-2 drawn margin, Gill will become just the third captain of the Blue Brigade, along with Sourav Ganguly and Virat Kohli-Jasprit, to achieve the feat in England.
