When India’s selectors picked Shubman Gill ahead of Shreyas Iyer in the Asia Cup 2025 squad, many questioned if it was the right decision from the selectors. But he has already shown how important and aggressive a batter he could prove to be in the shortest format with two incredible boundaries against Saim Ayub in the second over of the innings.

Gill charged up to Shaheen Afridi and nailed fours with ease. He was getting the runs around the park against both the pacers and spinners quite comfortably, before he was taken for some medical treatment due to cramps during the drinks break. That was a break in play and the batter.

After the time off, on the first delivery, he faced Faheem Ashraf. Gill missed the in-swinging delivery as the ball stopped a little and nailed the stumps to send the batter back in the dressing room for 47 runs in 28 balls, with the help of eight boundaries.

On the sixth ball of the last over of the powerplay, the Punjab-born went on the back foot and pulled the short ball over the mid-wicket region for a boundary. He also displayed his skills in the reverse sweep, like Abhishek Sharma was doing from the other end. He also clubbed two fours against Haris Rauf.

Earlier in the evening, Pakistan posted 171 runs on the board in their allotted 20 overs of the first innings. Their opening batter, Sahibzada Farhan, played a sensational knock of 58 runs in 45 balls with the help of five boundaries and three sixes at a strike rate of 128.89, while Faheem played a good finishing knock of unbeaten 20 runs in eight balls.

In the chase, along with Gill’s 47 runs in 28 balls at a strike rate of 167.86, Abhishek Sharma clubbed 74 runs in just 39 balls at a strike rate of 189.74 with five sixes and five boundaries. They had already crossed the 140-run mark on the board in 15 overs.
