When a batter bats on a surface with live green grass and under overcast conditions, the last thing you want is to get exposed and return to the dressing room via a run-out. That’s exactly what happened with Shubman Gill, the Indian captain, who looked in fluent rhythm during the small period in the middle during the fifth Test of the five-match series against England at Kennington Oval.
Gill has been the leading run-getter of the series among both camps with over 700 runs, having crossed Sunil Gavaskar’s 47-year-old record to become the highest run-getter as captain in the Test series for India. But he made one mistake and got back into the dressing room straightaway.

It was during the second session of the fixture, after nearly two hours of rain, that the game was delayed. In the previous over of the incident, the right-handed batter got a life in what could have been a suicidal situation. But he didn’t last long. Gill tapped the good length delivery under his eyes and started to take the single. However, he slipped in the middle, and that was enough for his downfall.

Atkinson had enough time to grab the ball and throw it onto the stumps as the misjudgment from the Punjab-born saw the visitors losing their third wicket of the innings. Just 10 minutes, it started to drizzle as India finished with 85/3, with Sudharsan still battling in the middle with his 28 unbeaten runs in 84 balls.
A moment of madness from Shubman Gill!

Gill, earlier in the day, lost his fifth consecutive toss of the series, stretching the margin to 15 successive losses for India across formats. They lost Yashasvi Jaiswal in the first half-hour period, as the southpaw was wrapped onto the pads before the umpires raised their finger for the LBW dismissal.
KL Rahul looked well for his short period in the middle, but after a few dry overs, he looked to cut the short ball, which jagged back to hit the stumps. India would feel hurt the most with the wicket of Gill, who is their leading run-getter in the series so far.
