Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar was felicitated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) with a boardroom called '10000 Gavaskar' at its Mumbai headquarters on May 15, 2025, to mark his record achievement of 10,000 Test runs. The ceremony, which was recorded in a video uploaded on Instagram by the BCCI, had Gavaskar unveiling the boardroom alongside BCCI president Roger Binny, vice-president Rajeev Shukla, and secretary Devajit Saikia. This dedication is to mark Gavaskar's historic milestone as the first batsman to reach 10,000 Test runs, which he achieved on March 7, 1987, playing a Test match against Pakistan in Ahmedabad.

Gavaskar, who represented India in 125 Tests and made 10,122 runs with 34 centuries, was grateful to the organizers and said, "I really appreciate the opportunity that I have gotten to be what I am, thanks to Indian cricket." This is a huge honor, and I am very thankful to the BCCI.” The ‘10000 Gavaskar’ boardroom, alongside a previously dedicated ‘Sachin Tendulkar Room,’ marks the BCCI’s effort to honor its legends, especially poignant as it coincides with the resumption of the IPL 2025 season on May 17 after a week-long suspension due to India-Pakistan tensions.

A Legacy that is etched in Indian Cricket

The video shows Gavaskar signing a photo of him playing; a flash of nostalgia personifies Gavaskar’s legacy in Indian cricket. Gavaskar was affectionately dubbed the ‘Little Master’ and enjoyed a record 34 Test centuries (in an era not known for high run scoring) to set the standard for other generations of players, including Sachin Tendulkar, who subsequently broke Gavaskar’s record.

This comes in the wake of Gavaskar’s recent, emotional appeal to the BCCI regarding their IPL 2025 celebrations in light of the recent Pahalgam attack—Gavaskar’s passion and immediacy towards this issue reflect not just his own past but how he is linked to the game as being bigger than oneself and where it sits within national significance. Gavaskar's image is ingrained into the ‘10000 Gavaskar’ boardroom; it serves as a permanent record of him personally, along with a legacy that they hope will inspire the next generation of cricketers at the seat of BCCI.
