Sunil Gavaskar presented a heartfelt gesture to Indian captain Shubman Gill after the conclusion of Day 3 of the fifth Test against England on Saturday (August 2). The legendary former cricketer gifted Gill a shirt with the "SG" initials and a special cap, hoping the young skipper would one day surpass his longstanding record. Gill, who has led from the front in his first series as captain, has impressed with the bat, accumulating 754 runs in 10 innings at an average of 75.40, including four centuries.

Gill's standout innings came at Edgbaston, where his commanding 269 laid the foundation for India’s biggest overseas win by a margin of 336 runs. However, despite the stellar form, he narrowly missed breaking Gavaskar’s historic tally of 774 runs in a single Test series. That record was set by Gavaskar during the 1970-71 tour of the West Indies, where he scored four centuries in just four matches at an incredible average of 154.80.

Sony Sports Network shared a clip of their exchange on X, capturing the touching moment. Gavaskar told Gill:
"Well done, I had gotten a gift for you in anticipation of going past [me]. But, at least you got something to aim for in the next series. This is just a little gift; it's a shirt with 'SG' initials. Someone made it for me, but I am giving it to you. I don't know if it will fit you. This is a little cap, which I give to very few people with my signature. All the best, and god bless."

Gavaskar praises Gill’s captaincy brilliance

Gavaskar also lauded Gill's captaincy acumen, especially his tactical move late on Day 3 that resulted in the dismissal of Zak Crawley. "The last move was fantastic. Sending a fielder there [deep] and bowling a yorker," Gavaskar remarked, referring to Siraj’s well-executed delivery that outfoxed Crawley on the final ball of the day.

Earlier, India resumed Day 3 on 75/2 with Akash Deep and Yashasvi Jaiswal at the crease. While Gill was dismissed early for 11, Jaiswal’s 118 anchored the innings. Contributions from Jadeja (53), Sundar (53), and a gritty 66 from Akash Deep propelled India to a total of 396. England, chasing 374, ended the day on 50/1 with Duckett and Crawley starting confidently before Siraj’s late strike gave India the edge heading into Day 4.
